Published the night before my birthday💕

As women, we kneel

When we are born, with our brothers,

On our knees, we crawl and cry

We laugh too

And we kneel.

As women, we kneel

When, as young girls, we fetch our father’s shoes

And we smile because he’s pleased

We skip away

And we kneel.

As women, we kneel

As teenagers when our boyfriend slogs our back

And we fall with a thud against the floor

We are silent

And we kneel.

As women, we don’t kneel

We watch as our boyfriend kneels and pulls out a ring

And asks a question we don’t really want

To answer, but we say yes

And we kneel.

As women, we kneel

As we float above the toilet bowl, spewing

As our stomach bulges

Our hair, held back

And we kneel.

As women, we kneel

When we pick up our children as they crawl

Like we once did, crawling and crying

They laugh too

And we kneel.

As women, we kneel

Begging and pleading for our husband to stop

To leave our little girl alone

We say, ‘hurt me instead’

And we kneel.

As women, we kneel

When our children run away from home

We cry and scream and wish to die

Because we’re all alone

And we kneel.

As women, we kneel

When our boss says we must get down

On our knees and beg for a raise equal to

The man beside us already has it

And we kneel.

As women, we kneel

When the burden on our backs becomes too large

And our bones curl because of it

They ache from pain

And we kneel.

As women, we kneel

When we watched our husband being lowered into a pit

Of dirt and bugs, and we don’t know if

We kneel from grief or relief

And we kneel.

And finally; As women, we kneel.

As our last breaths escape and our bodies cry from the distress and the agony

Because being lowered six feet under means that, even in death,

We are still below every man that walks the earth.

And we kneel.
